Student Wellbeing

Figen Arslan

Children have the right to be safe and protected, including at school. It is important that you feel confident that your child is safe and well in the care of their school.

Schools are responsible for keeping children safe. Schools have to meet legal requirements for the care, safety and welfare of students. From 1 August 2016, they also need to meet child safe standards to achieve a zero-tolerance approach to child abuse.

Our College is working collaboratively with professionals and the community to develop a commitment to the standards.

Victoria's child safe standards

In 2013, the Victorian Parliament held an Inquiry into the Handling of Child Abuse by Religious and Other Non-Government Organisations, resulting in the Betrayal of Trust Report.

The report found that more could be done to strengthen existing approaches to child safety. In response, the Victorian Government is phasing in child safe standards for organisations that work with children, including schools.

What are the standards?

The child safe standards require schools to consider all aspects of child safety and put measures in place to protect children from all forms of abuse, including:

The Minister for Education has set out in Ministerial Order No. 870 what specific actions schools need to take to meet the child safe standards. Our school's child safety policy is available for you online.

Coordinator's Message

Sebnem Golbasi

Dear parents, students and teachers,

We have come to another end of another term. Term 3 has been the busiest term with all the fun learning activities, competitions and assessments. It seems term 4 will be even more special with all events awaiting for us.

Students receiving awards at assembly

It was pleasure to see student participating to all sorts of activities with great enthusiasm and learning at the same time. Some of those activities were maths incursions, character day, maths competitions and the great debate.

We also hosted a special session where VCE Coordinators Mr Wesley Hall and Mr Tarik Terzi visited Sirius College Ibrahim Dellal Campus to talk to Year 10 students about VCE subject options.

Another important event occurred in term 3. Sirius College IDC students Elis Bilal and Hasanayn Ashraf were invited to St Theresa's Primary School to be on a panel to talk to primary students about secondary school life.

Before I finish I would like to remind you the date of few upcoming events: Secondary school camp which will start on 19th of October and finish 21st of October and also Speech and Exhibition night that will be held in ENCORE EVENTS on 11th of November Friday.

Overall, it was a great term with lots of learning opportunities I wish you a safe and sound holiday and hope to see you in parent teacher interviews in term 4.

Regards,
Sebnem Golbasi
